Building on the basics of LAFCo: LAFCo 101 + Brown Act/Public Records Act + Clerking 101

Join us for this very special Pre-Staff Workshop CALAFCO University session. Building on the basics of LAFCo: LAFCo 101 + Brown Act/Public Records Act + Clerking 101

Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach John Wayne Airport (Workshop location)

This is not your ordinary “Just the basics” session!  Join us for an informative, interactive and fun (yes, FUN!) session that explores all the basics of LAFCo. Whether you are looking to jump start your level of knowledge or take your skills to the next level, there is always something to learn at LAFCo 101. We’ll cover LAFCo 101 things such as the authority and purpose of LAFCo, the LAFCo review process; the laws involved in LAFCo decisions and updating Spheres of Influence and Municipal Service Reviews. You will have the opportunity to work together in small groups to discuss and resolve some challenging LAFCo scenarios. Navigating the Brown Act, Open Meetings Act and Public Records Act can be a challenge sometimes (especially helping your commissioners avoid serial meetings). So we’ll dive into how to keep yourself and your LAFCo out of trouble in these areas. We’ll also delve into LAFCo clerk best practices and how to effectively respond to the needs of your Executive Officer, Commissioners and the public all while keeping your sanity.
